Keene is a small town in Essex County, New York, United States. It is situated in the Adirondack Mountains and is part of the Adirondack Park. The population was 1,224 at the 2010 census.
The town is in the southern part of the county and is north of Lake Placid. It was founded in 1808 and was named for John Keene, an early settler.
Keene is home to the 50-mile (80 km) Jackrabbit Trail, the first trail in the Adirondack Park, as well as the popular Marcy Dam and Avalanche Lake. Marcy Dam is a popular destination for fishing, hiking and camping, and Avalanche Lake is a beautiful lake with stunning views.
The town is also home to the historic Keene Valley, a charming village nestled in the mountains with a variety of shops, restaurants, inns, and galleries. The Keene Valley Library is a great place to learn more about the area’s history and culture.
